Finding Your Voice Beyond the “Shoulds”

by Lauren Berlin

As the eldest daughter in a traditional Midwest family, my life was scripted by “shoulds.” Get married young? Check. Climb the corporate ladder? Check. Take on every leadership role offered? Check. From the outside, I was succeeding at all the things I was supposed to do. But something was missing.

My journey to becoming an executive coach and business consultant began when I finally asked myself a revolutionary question: “What do I actually want?” That simple inquiry cracked open a door I didn’t even know existed. The real transformation started when I saw other women charting their own paths, succeeding in ways that aligned with their authentic selves rather than external expectations.

Now, I partner with ambitious leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners who are ready to write their own stories. Every journey is unique. For some clients, it’s about recognizing their existing success instead of constantly seeking more credentials. For others, it’s about redefining growth on their own terms.

As one client shared, “I increased my business revenue by 30% while establishing clear business hours – proof that sustainable growth is possible!” Another noted, “Having a
professional help guide and reflect back the habits, behaviors, and beliefs that are subtly or not-so-subtly defining your life is invaluable.”

These transformations happen when we step beyond the “shoulds” and into our authentic power. When we stop asking for permission to take up space. When we realize that our unique path is valid, valuable, and worthy of pursuit.

That’s why I’m thrilled to join the WELA community. As a relatively new Bay Area resident, I believe in the power of women coming together to support, celebrate, and inspire each other. Because when women are driven by passion rather than “shoulds,” truly amazing things happen.

I’m here to connect, to learn, and to support other women entrepreneurs in finding their voice and creating success on their own terms. Because your path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be exactly right for you.
